Safety is paramount in the oil and gas industry. With its inherent risks and hazards, proper training and certification are essential to safeguarding the well-being of workers and the environment. Oilfield safety training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, mitigate, and respond to potential dangers effectively. From general safety protocols to specialized job-specific tasks, acquiring the appropriate certifications is crucial for anyone working in this field.

These safety courses are mandatory for nearly all oilfield work:

  • PST (Petroleum Safety Training): Provides an overview of safety guidelines specific to the petroleum industry, covering topics such as hazard recognition, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures.
  • H2S Training (Hydrogen Sulfide Awareness): Focuses on the dangers associated with hydrogen sulfide gas, including detection, prevention, and response measures to ensure worker safety in environments where H2S may be present.
  • First Aid Certification: Teaches essential first aid techniques, including CPR, wound management, and medical emergency response, enabling individuals to provide immediate assistance in case of injury or illness.
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System): Educates workers on the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials commonly encountered in the workplace, promoting chemical safety and risk management.

The certifications listed below pertain to particular industry segments and are not required for all oilfield workers.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Required for individuals operating commercial vehicles, including trucks and tanker trucks used for transporting oil and gas products, ensuring competency in vehicle operation and compliance with transportation regulations.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certification: Provides training on the safe transportation of dangerous goods by road, rail, air, and sea, including classification, packaging, labeling, and documentation requirements to ensure compliance with transportation regulations.
  • ATV Operation Certification: Provides training on the safe operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) commonly used in oilfield operations, emphasizing control, maneuverability, and adherence to safety protocols while navigating varied terrain.
  • Confined Space Entry Training: Addresses the risks associated with confined spaces, such as tanks, vessels, and pipelines, and emphasizes safe entry procedures, atmospheric monitoring, and rescue protocols to protect workers from hazards like asphyxiation and engulfment.
  • Fire Safety Certification: Provides training in fire prevention, detection, and suppression techniques, including the proper use of firefighting equipment and evacuation procedures to mitigate the risk of fires in oilfield facilities.
  • Fall Protection Training: Covers proper procedures and equipment for preventing falls from heights, including the use of harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points, to minimize the risk of injuries associated with working at elevated locations.
  • Rigging and Lifting Certification: Covers the safe rigging and lifting of heavy equipment and materials, including load calculations, rigging hardware selection, and proper lifting techniques, to prevent accidents and injuries during lifting operations.
  • Rigging Gear Inspection Certification: Teaches individuals how to inspect and maintain rigging gear and lifting equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and minimizing the risk of equipment failure during rigging operations.
  • HazMat (Hazardous Materials) Certification: Focuses on the safe handling, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials, including identification, containment, and emergency response procedures to minimize risks to personnel and the environment.
  • HAZMAT Endorsement: Supplemental to the CDL, this endorsement certifies individuals to transport hazardous materials, requiring additional training on the safe handling, loading, and transportation of hazardous substances.
  • Scaffolding Certification: Provides training on the safe assembly, use, and dismantling of scaffolding structures commonly used in construction and maintenance activities in the oilfield, ensuring stability and fall protection for workers at elevated heights.
  • Offshore Survival Training: Prepares individuals for emergency situations encountered in offshore oil and gas operations, including helicopter underwater escape training (HUET), sea survival techniques, and evacuation procedures to enhance survival chances in the event of a marine incident.
  • Blowout Prevention Certification: Focuses on preventing and controlling blowouts, sudden and uncontrolled releases of pressure from oil or gas wells, through the implementation of preventive measures, well control techniques, and emergency response protocols.
  • Gas Testing Certification: Equips workers with the skills to conduct atmospheric testing for the presence of hazardous gases in confined spaces or work areas, ensuring a safe working environment by detecting and mitigating gas-related risks.
  • Marine Survival Training: Focuses on survival techniques and procedures specific to offshore environments, including lifeboat operations, survival suits, and emergency evacuation procedures to enhance safety during marine emergencies.
  • Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET): Teaches individuals how to safely escape from a submerged helicopter in the event of a water landing or ditching, providing essential skills for offshore workers who travel to and from platforms by helicopter.
  • BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training): Provides comprehensive safety training for offshore personnel, covering topics such as sea survival, fire safety, and helicopter safety, to ensure readiness for working in the offshore oil and gas industry.
  • Well Control Certification: Focuses on well control principles and techniques, including kick detection, blowout prevention, and well control operations, to prevent and manage well control incidents during drilling and completion operations.
  • Wireline Operator Certification: Provides training on operating wireline equipment used for well intervention and logging operations, emphasizing safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and emergency response procedures.
  • Pipeline Integrity Management Certification: Focuses on pipeline integrity management principles and practices, including inspection, maintenance, and repair techniques, to prevent pipeline failures and ensure the safe operation of oil and gas pipelines.
  • Pipeline Emergency Response Training: Prepares individuals to respond effectively to pipeline emergencies, such as leaks, ruptures, and spills, through the implementation of emergency response plans, containment measures, and environmental protection strategies.

This list is by no means exhaustive. Many positions in the oil and gas industry require more extensive or job-specific certifications. Large companies may create their own safety courses that are specific to their operations.

Companies often cover the costs associated with obtaining these certifications for their employees, recognizing the critical importance of safety in oilfield operations. However, they are more likely to hire individuals who already possess relevant certifications, as it demonstrates a commitment to safety and reduces the need for additional training. Therefore, investing in acquiring these certifications can enhance employability and career prospects within the oil and gas industry, while also prioritizing personal safety and professional development.
